Sugar & Gold Blurb:

“I loved you before. I will love you forever.”

Nikolai Alexei Young was born with a special gift…one he’d do anything to lose. The heart and soul of every person he comes into contact with is an open book to his heightened senses. Colorful emotions, whispers of thoughts, the sour tastes of old memories…He feels them all. The sci-fi books would call him an empath. For Nikolai, his ability has made him an exile. He roams the U.S. alone, avoiding the glut of life in big cities, and using his innate talents to win money in underground poker games. Just enough to keep going, one town to the next. He has no hope that his life can be anything else, until he meets her…

At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…

Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self. Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.

But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. When the unthinkable happens, Fiona’s plans come crashing down, and Nikolai discovers his hated ability might be the only thing that can save the woman he loves.

Sugar & Gold is a new adult romance with shades of the paranormal and is the second book in the Dreamcatcher novels, a series of interconnected STANDALONES.

Sugar & Gold Excerpt:

She breathed a genuine laugh and held my gaze. Everything about her was pink; her drink, her hair, the bright halo of glimmering dust that surrounded her.

Kindness, compassion, charity. Those were the feelings I associated with pink.

I hadn’t seen it this strong in anyone in a long time.

Fiona clinked her glass to my bottle. “Thanks for taking care of my over-eager dance partner, Nik. And for the drink.”

“Sure.”

She sipped her Cosmo. “Not much of a talker, are you?” Her eyes were impossibly bright, her smile showing a broad mouth and full lips.

“Club’s not a great place for talk,” I said.

“True,” she said, “but here we are.”

Here we are…

A short silence fell.

“Nik,” Fiona mused. “Nik, Nik,” she said again, in a light, sing-song manner. “Short for Nicholas?”

“Nikolai,” I said.

“Oh, I like that.” Her colors warmed and sweetened, like an invitation, drawing me closer. “Are you Russian? You don’t have an accent.”

“My mother is.”

“Do you speak it?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I picked some up.”

She scooted closer on her seat. “Say something in Russian.”

“Like what?”

“I’m not picky. I can’t speak a word so anything is going to sound good.”

I thought for a second and then spoke aloud the only thought I had in my head.

“Ti samaya krasivaya devushka na svete.”

Fiona’s smile widened and the bright wisps of her happiness wrapped around me. I wanted to take in more of it. Which made no sense at all. With other women, their scents were so often cloying and unwanted like the air wasn’t mine to breathe.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Get a grip.

I sucked down a long swig of beer. Fiona watched me, her eyebrows raised, then she laughed. “Um, Nik? You realize you’re supposed to tell me what you said, right?”

I shrugged and my lips twitched. “Don’t remember.”

Fiona laughed again. “Liar.”

We both took a sip from our drinks and let a little silence fall between us. A nice silence.

“That was lovely, your Russian,” Fiona said eventually. “Whatever you said, it sounded…sexy.”

My gaze swung to her eyes. “Yeah?”

She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “Yeah. I was going to say something harmless like ‘unique’ or ‘exotic’, but I’d rather be honest with you, Nikolai. I don’t like playing games.” Her brow furrowed slightly. “I don’t like it at all.”

I sensed a shadow starting to creep over her. Something old and full of pain. Driving it away suddenly became my only goddamn purpose in life.

“I guess you’re not going to like me much then,” I said. “I play games constantly. Every day.”

A smile crept over her lips. “Is that so?”

“Sure,” I said. “Omaha, Texas Hold’em, stud, draw, lowball, high-low split…”

She laughed, flaring pink again, and the shadow around her retreated. “A joke and a smile too. I was beginning to wonder if you ever smiled.”

I shrugged. “It happens.”

“And those games, they’re all poker, right? You play poker every day?”

“Not every day. Most days.”

“For a living?”

“No, I’m a…” I coughed. “I’m a salesman. Motorcycle parts. I travel a lot for the job, and finding poker games in each city is sort of my hobby.”

My standard lie, though I hated laying it on her. I knew plenty of grinders who lived off their poker winnings, but that was for the love of the game. I played because thanks to the ken it was easy to win, and I’d never cared that it was cheating. It was the only way to put my strange ability to use that I knew of, and it allowed me to give a big fuck you to the universe for cursing me with it in the first place.

But lying to Fiona felt dirty. Even when haunted by bad memories she was luminous, while I was tatted and stained, as if the ink on my hands would bleed out and onto the white of her dress if I touched her.

She cocked her head at me, wearing a perplexed little smile. “You don’t look like a salesman.” Her eyes drifted over my tattooed arms and neck, to the talons piercing my ears. “When I think of ‘traveling salesman’ I picture a middle-aged guy in a suit with a suitcase full of encyclopedias.”

“No suitcase,” I said. “Catalogues and order forms.”

“And you travel a lot?”

“Almost non-stop.”

“That sounds lonely.”

“You do something long enough, you get used to it.”

“I know what you mean,” Fiona said, a tinge of darkness around her words—that shadow started to creep back until she buried it. “But the poker makes it fun?”

“Breaks up the monotony of the road.”

“Do you make a lot of money?” she said, then laughed, beautiful in her self-consciousness. “Sorry, I’m not asking for your bank balance, I just meant, are you any good at it?”

“I’m really fucking good at it,” I said.

Her eyebrows shot up and she nudged my arm with a laugh. “If you don’t say so yourself.”

“Maybe I feel like being honest with you too.” I could feel where she touched me, a tingling heat that was slow to fade.

“I like that.” She swirled her cherry around in her drink by its stem. “So are you in town, selling motorcycle parts, for very long?”

“Couple of days.”

“I hope the storm doesn’t put a damper on your business.”

“It won’t.”

“You’re lucky. At my job, we’ve been given the next few days off.”

“You sound bummed about that.”

“Every penny counts.” She met my eye. “I’m moving out of the country very soon and want to save up.”

I took a sip of my beer. I’d known Fiona for five minutes, but the idea of her moving any further away than her seat at the bar filled me with inexplicable dread.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

But it wasn’t what was wrong with me, anymore. It was what was right. The girl exuded a calm that danced along my skin, and when I inhaled, it was like breathing in the scent of something delicious but far away. The thrumming life all around me grew quiet. For the first time, I felt close to peace, and I wanted more.

If I touched her…

“Nikolai?” Her blush matched the color of her drink. She rested her chin in her hand. “Not to sound cheesy but you’re undressing me with your eyes.”

I felt heat creep along my neck and a bumbling apology rose to my mouth. Instead, I held her gaze, leaned closer to her. “You want to know what I said to you in Russian?”

Her eyes were bright and I could feel her draw closer to me. “Yes. Tell me.”

“I said that you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

The deep pink of her darkened to red. Not the ugly red of hate or anger, but the heated red of intense want. Hers matched mine. I wanted that strange sense of peace she exuded, but I wanted to touch her too. To take her hard and lose myself in her completely.

Fiona held my gaze. “I don’t think that’s true, but the way you look at me…I can almost believe it. Like how you watched me on the dance floor. I liked you watching me, Nikolai. It was as if I could feel your eyes on me before I found you.”

You found me…

When I found an eviction notice taped on my apartment door, I had two options: find a comfortable cardboard box to call home, or move in with Tucker Jameson.
Seeing that cardboard makes me feel itchy, I chose the latter. Which shouldn’t be that big of a deal since Tucker is one of my good friends. And because he’s still pining after his ex-girlfriend and I’m trying to finish my nursing degree, there is nothing to worry about in the romance department, making my last semester an easy one to conquer.
Boy, was I wrong.
Rules are set, dinners are made, conversations are had, and a shirtless, swoony roommate walks around in nothing but a pair of black briefs, ruining me for every other man.
Before I know it, I turn into a panting, lust-filled woman begging for Tucker to kiss me, touch me, and show me exactly what is hiding under those briefs.
But with great orgasms, comes great consequences.
Tucker might be my friend and roommate but he’s also my best friend’s ex-boyfriend, making him completely off-limits. At least that’s what my brain is telling me, my heart is speaking an entirely different language.

About the Author:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

******* Much love and thanks to the author for providing this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn’t wait to read this. Only my second Emma Scott book, but I knew I would love it. Only reservation going in, I am a heart failure patient, I knew I would be looking at this from a different angle than most. Not just that I can relate to Jonah, I am Jonah. Not sure who was more nervous on my take of the book myself or Emma. All I could get out after I read it was “Wow.” Rest assured it was a good Wow.

Kacey, up and coming rock star, train wreck, drunken Kacey is poured into the back of poor Jonah’s limo after a night of booze induced rioting after her concert. Just what Jonah needed at this hour at his second job. Kacey fueled by the need to numb herself and keep everyone at arm’s length with an Evian bottle of vodka wakes up on the stranger’s couch in a sparsely decorated apartment in the middle of Vegas. Kacey has the look, talent and personality to hit it big, but inside, Kacey is empty and craving love and affection something her father purposely denied her. Does she even want this rock star life? So here she sits on a strangers couch asking him to take her to breakfast before he returns her to her band life. Can Jonah afford this in his tight schedule? No.

“Thanks for being a good guy, Jonah. There’s a shortage in the world”

Jonah, working on a thesis for a Masters of Arts degree from the Carniee Mellon University is a glass blower by trade. He is working on an installation for the prestigious art gallery in the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas. He is on a “schedule”, keeps his circle small and is driven to leave behind a legacy. He doesn’t have the time or the energy for a Kacey type. 18 months ago, Jonah received a heart transplant. Heart failure at 25 that doesn’t happen right? It did to Jonah, a virus settled in his heart and caused heart failure. Jonah is now facing rejection leading to heart failure. His time is limited, he swallows the pills, lives the diet, keeps a routine and makes time for his 6 “people”. He can’t bring another person into this mess just to possibly destroy them and maybe even himself.
“I can’t stand it. I have my circle and that’s it. I don’t want to tell people outside the circle. I don’t want them to have to find out. I don’t let anyone in…”

“And yet,” I said, gulping air, getting a hold of myself. “Here I am.”

“Here you are…” He said, his eyes roaming my face. “Believe me, I didn’t want to let you in. But it was almost as if…”

“What?” I whispered.

“As if I didn’t have a choice,” He said. “I tried to keep [my] walls up, keep to my routine… But you got in anyway.” He gently swiped a tear from my chin. “You feel it too, right?”
I nodded. “Yes.”

Hard as they try to fight it and stick to the schedule and a friendship, it was there, the I already know/knew this person. It wasn’t overly angsty, they had a sweet relationship that developed naturally. I really loved what they both offered as far as being what the other needed and wanted. At the same time they pushed each other out of their bubbles.

“I love you,” I said. “God, I never thought this would happen to me.”

“But it did,” she whispered. “It happened and all we can do now is take care of each other. Live in the little moments, right? Just like we promised. The little moments. We have so many. Thousands upon thousands.”
If you are ready for a great and emotional read, then grab this up in a hurry. Along the lines of Me before you.

******As the heart failure patient, I truly appreciate how this was handled by Emma. It wasn’t overly medical but gave enough pertinent info regarding transplant rejection and heart failure to have an understanding of what Jonah was living, and dying, with each day. The thoughts of Jonah mirror mine. Those feelings in the Dr office, not the exam room. The I can’t bring you into this nightmare, but I need you here feelings. The anger that comes with the fact that life is not fucking fair at times. The desire to live the “moments”…. All of them. I understand the “why go to the Dr when my body will tell me when it’s time”, why waste those moments at a Dr or hospital. She did a remarkable job of capturing the medical side of heart failure as well as the emotional impact on the patient and their family. I appreciate the honest portrayal of CHF and rejection. I want to throw my flip flop at the tv when transplant and chf patients are running on a beach right after transplant… No pills…no wheezing. So thank you Emma you nailed it. ❤

BEAUTIFULLY Decadent by L.A. Fiore

“I had the social skills of a goat”

Team Avery the goof.

Beautifully Decadent is the third book in the Beautifully Damaged series, but it can be read as a standalone. I was nervous going in as this is my first read of the series. Now I will be reading one and two! You can’t help but enjoy the whole crew.

in this third installment we get to know Rafe’s story. I understand everyone was lusting after Rafe’s alpha male story. I do have to say it was Avery, who sucked me into the book and had me reading with one eye open in the middle of the night when I should have been sleeping (even with an annoyed toddler trying to sleep with momma’s kindle light on.)

Avery is and always has been a baker. Fresh out of culinary school, she lands her dream job as a pastry chef spot at a NY hot spot! Her luck doesn’t end there when she lands a carriage house rental in the Bronx? Yes, the Bronx. When out steps her landlord who is heavily blessed by the fairy godmother beautiful wand. Avery had me laughing out loud and cheering for her throughout the story. She is adorable, kind, funny and sassy…. A goof to round it out.

Rafe likes his privacy. Growing up in orphanages from the age of 9 when his father was sent to prison. His family has become his brothers from the youth homes and orphanages. He is a wood smith building amazing furniture while breathing life back into his down on its luck home and carriage house in the Bronx. He is content to cruise through life keeping most at arm’s length, except his dog Loki. When he agrees to help his friend Trace but renting out his carriage house to his new pastry chef he is expecting a plump grandma type. Not at all prepared for what he sees when he walks out to see sexy unassuming Avery hugging his dog…. Let the sparks fly.

You root for Avery and Rafe as you enjoy the supporting cast and even a bit of mystery and thrills along the way. Some characters will make you want to poke their eyes out, but will make you feel for Avery and Rafe all the more. do not start this book if you plan on getting anything else done that day. I will now definitely be adding more Miss Fiore to my TBR.

5 stars

Hustler from Meghan Quinn and Jessica Prince

image

Hustler from Meghan Quinn and Jessica Prince.

https://goo.gl/6d3Oyg

This book is just another reason for me to love Meghan Quinn and an exciting discovery of Jessica Prince!

Meghan Quinn has always been my go-to author when I want romantic comedies with some embarrass yourself in public laughter. Jessica Prince is a new for me, so I was really curious to see how their co-written book worked out. I can say I love Meghan even more and will need to check out more from Jessica!

He’s a genius poker player, she’s a waitress wanting to be a gymnast. He’s a player, she’s not. From the start their relationship was combative and thrilling. Falling in love for this pair was not easy nor was trusting one another which made it far more entertaining to read.

I knew going into this book that Gavin was a hustler. I mean the name of the book is Hustler. What I didn’t know was how cocky and arrogant he was going to be. I love how sarcastic Nell is and I love how she didn’t give into Gavin like he wanted. She was a challenge for him and one he didn’t win easily. Nell is such a relateable character. She’s funny, smart, works her ass off just to make ends meet and would go to bat for everyone she loves and cares about.

Gavin and Nell together were not perfect but hell what relationship is perfect? They were good for each other and they fit. Nell didn’t put up with his BS. Gavin didn’t know what hit him until it was too late. But in the end, I loved it! It really is a funny, smoking hot book and if you love alpha males who are rich, arrogant at times, but know when to give in then you have to read Hustler!

Re read

*Spoilers Ahead*

Beautiful sacrifice is the latest adventure of the Maddox boys. I love this series and Jamie. Hard not to fall for the rowdy bunch of men and the crazy woman that can rein them in. In this humorous, infuriating, emotional and I can’t but this book down installment we fall follow Taylor Maddox (one of the tattooed twins). What is not to love about Taylor? He’s a Maddox, so of course he’s hot, he’s tattooed, feisty and a firemen. A Hotshot crew member from Estes Park Colorado. But don’t tell dad, Jim, he thinks his twins sell insurance here in Colorado. Taylor, like all the brothers are drawn to “crazy” women. Enter Falyn Fairchild. Daughter to renowned Cardio Surgeons and political hopefuls in Colorado. Ever expected to keep up appearances. Falyn bucked it all and is a strong willed, albeit often annoying woman with a painful past she is determined to face and never relive. To say Falyn keeps everyone other then her bosses at a local hot spot cafe and place of residence at arms length is an understatement. If you know the Maddox men they find this challenging, emotional and driven type of a woman beyond attractive. Besides she tells Taylor No! He is ever persistent in friending Falyn and even he himself is not sure why.

Falyn and Taylor fall for each other and piss each other off immediately. What could go wrong!? I admit there were times were the commutation and trust issues were so high even I thought ok guys…. move on. Boy do Taylor and Falyn face many trials. But they face them together. In “beautiful” Jamie style we get a look back to the other books and brothers in the series and get a few small glimpses of what is still to come. We get to check in with all the boys and their crazy woman. Not to forget looking into the secrets that constantly haunt the family.

In typical Jamie fashion she will make you giggle, want to slap a character or two, cry, cheer and flat out at times say Wtf (excuse me but you do). This is the first book in this series since Travis that I read in one sitting and couldn’t but down. I HAD to follow their story. I do feel there are some situations and people that were important to our understanding of Falyn that needed more time dedicated to them. However, Jamie does usually answer those lingering questions eventually. I absolutely love hot shot Taylor. He may be surpassing Travis for me, but still have that soft spot for Travis and all the boys. If you follow this series you will not be disappointed.

Peter: I’ve always felt
like I was saving myself for her.
Not that way. Not sexually. Saving my life. Trying to be smart about what I do.
Actually giving a damn. Because I matter to her. It’s something I’ve never had
— anyone who cares like she does — and it’s absolutely amazing. She’s amazing, this very good girl I can not have. Her dad made that clear the
night he caught us together, but that’s not enough to stop me from me from wanting
her.

Still, it would be a completely selfish move on my part to draw her any deeper
into my life. I just heard my mom’s getting out of prison early. Not for good
behavior. Because of overcrowding. Life was always crazy with mom. If she comes
